I'm writing this blog, not out of well informed information and experience, but rather as a frustrated spectator, a furious member of society watching yet another disaster unfolding in my beloved country at the hands of a bunch of opportunistic, idiotic, violent thugs who are bringing the entire nations tertiary education institutions to a standstill through riots and hooliganism in the name of an otherwise just cause!
"phew, deep breath"!
Of course I'm talking about the protests escalating into riots at South Africa's universities.
I've been following the news, listening to interviews and reading the forums so I may not have all the facts but I have a decent idea of what's going on...
Basically, a small group of students at Wits university started a protest against the proposed varsity fee hike, followed shortly by Stellenbosch university students and since then every major university in the country.
Now this grievance I can understand. Our useless, corrupt ANC government promised free education to all at the start of the new democratic rainbow nation. This never happened as the dishonest brain-deads in government systematically plundered and pillaged the country's coffers and continue wasting an exponentially growing amount of public money on blunders and personal gains, while the cost of education (etc) continues to rise to the point that only the wealthy can afford to send their kids to the top universities. The proposed fee hikes will put many people out of range of being able to afford this.
I understand this dilemma, BUT, it costs an enormous amount of money to run a university, essentially a state institution that needs to be supported by the state, and as our criminal state is not providing sufficient funding to run our world class universities the money needs to come from somewhere - student fees! Sad but true! So now the universities are having to put their fees up to keep up with the cost of inflation and the students are getting pissed off because it's getting too much.
So they're protesting, and so they should!
BUT, the protest is escalating rapidly into riots and becoming a problem. It's getting destructive and violent, and students who just want to get on with their studies and get through their exams are being threatened and intimidated. Cars being overturned and damaged, tires burned in the streets, access roads barricaded, frightened students not being allowed to leave campus while mobs of black kids harass them (saw the video). I saw on EWN earlier that students are threatening not to write exams unless their demands are met. Now really, how ridiculously stupid can you get... you don't write exams, you fail, you have to PAY to do it again next year, YOU LOSE! Not the university or the people you piss off while you shout and demand and break everything in your path, YOU lose! But these idiotic thugs are too god damned stupid to realise how stupid they are! It's like a mist of violent, destructive instincts between their ears! Yet everybody feels sorry for them, because of the original cause and reason for the protest, which I'm sure many of them have forgotten in the fog of battle-rage!
I could go on and on about what is happening now, and as expected this little protest is snowballing into a massive countrywide riot (I see SAPS are readying the riot squads)... I reckon this thing is going to get much worse with the result people are going to get hurt or killed, somewhere university property will be set on fire (because that's how the African riot mentality rolls) and chaos is going to erupt before the situation calms down, universities will fold under the mass bullying and give these shits what they demand, and for years to come clever people and the media will be debating and blaming and at the end of the day education will be no better or cheaper.
In fact, since many universities already subsidize many "poor" (black) students from the higher fees charged to the middle and upper class families for their kids to get educated, as the fees will not be raised with inflation the universities will not be able to offer as many students a free or discounted education as they do now (while the wealthy get a nice discount on fees not raised with inflation), so in the end less poor kids will have the opportunity to get an education because of the protests and riots! So the poor are the losers in the end! But these retards making a mess now are too thick to see past their noses, they only care about themselves in the here and now! Next year they're burning tires in the roads again because only half the free degrees on offer this year will be available, leaving the other half to build a life of crime to survive. Everybody loses!
Unless government steps in. Hahahaha, what a joke!
As a result, on a personal level, I won't be sending my kid to university in this country if this trend continues because if these mindless thugs have their way the quality of tertiary education in SA will only get worse until like our government, state hospitals, parastatals, municipalities, defense force, border controls, police force, etc our universities will fall apart and become barely functional, dilapidated and worthless on the global stage. And that will be a damn shame because we currently have some of the best universities on the planet!
But,, big but, lets hope that doesn't happen and whatever common sense still exists will prevail and this nonsense gets sorted out in a way that everybody wins, especially the students who want to get a good education through hard work (not protests). Top prize would be the government stepping in and coming to the party with a much bigger budget allocated to education, but with the likes of dumbass Zuma in charge with his huge family needing their Nkandla castle to live in, that's unlikely!
These kids AND university staff should really stand together and do to parliament what they're doing on the campuses - mass protest and blockades, bring the government to it's knees. But really guys, finish your exams first! This is NOT an excuse to get out of writing your finals, you will fail and the university will only make more money out of you writing again next year!
Rant over!
