Outdid myself this evening with a brilliant oven baked fish dish. It was a delicious custom-designed meal comprised of a normal pack of frozen hake fillets baked in the oven for 40 minutes on 180 degrees celcius in a sauce made as follows:
Cut up 3 carrots and 4 baby marrows (courgettes) and lightly fried them in butter, adding a whoosh of thyme and a dash of blue cheese dressing.
To this add a fish bake packet sauce (ja I know that's cheating - I never claimed to be a pro!), a good sprinkling of Ina Paarman's fish seasoning, a hearty squirt of lemon juice, about half a pint of milk, and a big handful of grated cheddar cheese.
Allow to bubble & boil gently for about 2 minutes, stirring continuously so the cheese doesn't stick to the bottom of the cauldron.
Then pour the sauce & vegetables over the fish in a baking tray, and whack in the oven to cook...
While the fish is cooking I boiled up 2 gem squash, which when cooked I spooned out and mashed with a little margerine, some sugar and a sprinkling of cinnamon.
I also over-cooked some rice, that came out like brown-bottomed pap again.
Apart from the rice it was a lovely meal, whipped up simply and effortlessly in very little time. Once it was in the oven and the rice & squash on the cook I did a good half hour of Facebook!
I'm sorry folks but I don't feel like talking about anything else now! I'm quite knackered and my couch is beckoning to me!
Yippee - Rammstein concert tomorrow!

Hooray it's Monday!
Note the sarcasm in the title of this post! It feels like it was just Friday; I swear time speeds up over weekends! But I suppose it would if you spend half of Sunday sleeping and the other half doing sweet nothing!
It's now halfway through the lunch hour and I'm not sure if I'm hungry enough to make that tuna mayo with chilli sauce on toast, the belly is still full of the best ever bowl of instant noodles, biltong flavour, pimped up with a dollop of mayo and a glob of Beefy Bovril. I've become somewhat of a self-proclaimed expert on 2-minute noodles! Yet I still can't fuckin cook rice!
So I don't really have anything exciting to talk about, so if you're reading this I apologise for wasting your time. I'll make a bigger effort tonight.
The fat little haloed cherub in my conscience has started nagging me again lately to get back onto the health & fitness mission that was working so well the last 3 months of last year! The gym has only seen me twice so far in 2011 {hangs head in shame!}, I'm drinking way too much again and eating with no remorse or consideration of the consequences. So maybe this evening we should get our fat ass down to the gym and hopefully onto the squash court. But then again, it's Monday, and the gym is impossibly busy on Mondays, parking is a nightmare, and I should probably cook a nice meal for the family!
That's settled then - gym will have to wait until tomorrow, definitely tomorrow, because on Wednesday it's the Rammstein concert (wooo hoooo can't wait for that!!!) which will be a late night so Thursday I'll probably be too tired for gym, because I'm so unfit all over again that I don't have the extra reserve energy anymore!
How's that for a load of bullshit excuses? My abnormal mind really thinks like that! Blame it on the fit handsome red dude with the pitchfork who has his way with my chubby cherub in the confines that is my conscience!
Anyway, my boss just noticed me typing away furiously, commented on what crap I'm writing about today, and pointed out there's only 10 minutes left of lunch, probably noticing the unopened can of tuna on my desk. So I suppose I better get in the kitchen and whip this up so as not to still be eating a minute past 2pm, as I was already 15 minutes late this morning, again!
Bye bye...

Lazy Sunday
Naturally after staying up until just about sunrise this morning, writing the previous blog and drinking myself into a stupor, I was rather lazy today and did little else besides loll around in front of the TV, after waking up at 11.30. So yet again the car didn't get washed and nor did the jacuzzi get cleaned out and fixed up! Total waste of a day, and a reminder of why I chose to stop drinking last year, but anyway that's a bitching session for my other private blog!
We didn't eat very healthy today either! Baked potatoes for supper, I had 3 big ones topped with butter, lemon juice, cheese and Nando's extra hot sauce. For lunch I had a cheese & marmite sandwich, toasted, and one of those frozen microwave meals (Bobotie) that's been in the freezer for about a year! And in between snacked on chocolates, caramel out the tin, cheesy chicken sausages, and gallons of Cocopine Oros.
I had to clear out the sweets cupboard too, twice, because the fuckin bastard ants found the sweets and came in drones for the feast! I murdered them all and washed them unceremoniously down the kitchen sink! I hate these bloody ants at this time of the year, they are everywhere in vast numbers and no matter how clean the place is they still persist!
The Mnet movie on tonight is The Book of Eli, I'm quite looking forward to that!
Ashamedly I've not even had a shower today, that's how lazy this day has been.
This weekend has flown by actually, it's nearly back to work on Monday again then a whole long week until the next weekend, and we're so flat broke right now it's going to be a boring month until pay day!

Saturday, what a day!
Ok, shoes off, window open (because it's so hot in here, baby), music on courtesy of a fantastic local online radio station MuthFM, ... lets rock... sit back, open your eyes, enjoy the ride....
doef doef doef...
Let me tell you about my Saturday, and what a long interesting busy day it was, by my standards anyway...
dot dot dot (my signature writing style) ! Ja ok admittedly I've had a few 'alcoholic beverages' along the way, exponentially most recently. Just deal with it! I'm honest as a judge - no that don't work.... priest - fuck they're pretty dodgy these days too... virgin... like Madonna!... NO,... ja as honest as an ANC politician... ok now you're taking the piss de Klerk! Ha ha!
Anyway, true story:
Was woken up at around 6am by the cutest most adorable little happy face in the world, Tammy, whispering in my face "daddy, daddy are you awake?", as she often does on weekend mornings. Of course I opened my eyes and saw this and beamed with joy at seeing my little sweetheart smiling at me, but being the doos I can be sometimes, unintentionally, I said "No, I'm still sleeping, but come for a cuddle" and I yanked her up and over between her mom and me, and tried to fall back asleep!
As if...
She promptly kicked my blankets off me in defiance and rolled off the bed and headed for her room to get some toys.
I fell back asleep.
Next thing she was back in my bed, with Ellie, Raffie, 17 Barbies, and a load of wooden puzzles, all being described in succession as they landed on my head!
I tried to ignore the procession for a while but soon gave in to the demands for attention and took the Tamonster downstairs for breakfast and a bottle of tea!
Bla bla bla, pass the morning drama...
After being late, as usual (my fault for a rare change! I prepared the family to leave by 10am to be there for 10h30 while I MADE THE BOOKING for 10am so leaving late at 10h15 of course we only got there at 10h40 after driving like the proverbial bat out of hell!) we raced of irresponsibly to the Meerendal Wine Estate to meet Granny Lindsay (my mom) and her boyfriend Arthur for breakfast. What an awesome place, perfect weather in a beautiful setting; breakfast was in the manor house, food details:
Then we took a walk down through the publically open areas of the farm and took Tammy down to the sheep and the awesome tame horses! Tams had a ball, of course, as 3 year olds do, running around excitedly working off her usual immeasurable energy! The stupid looking sheep were funny as fuck, though Tambelina LOVED the horses! They were so tame, both had their heads through the fence happily being stroked and chatted to while the spotted brown one arrogantly took a good long piss that nearly flooded the field! Though I think I was the only one that noticed this, and the photo shows nothing! I SWEAR - TRUE STORY!!! Nevertheless Granny had fun with Tams and the farm animals.
Heading back up through the fields mom and Arthur looked like a couple of love-struck teenagers cuddling and snuggling as far as they walked, clearly in love and happy to be together, though mom seemed to be in overdrive show-off paradise parading her absolutely perfect grandchild around, she nearly burst with pride when Tammy took Arthur to show him a spider that she'd found, ignoring the rest of us!
We had a lovely time together, for me it was nice to see Arthur again after 19 years. I was wrong when I told him today it was 17 years, I was 15 when I last saw him when him and mom were 'friends', I'm 34 now! Unless my math is wrong, again!
Anyway, history aside, we both aged visibly since, with plenty of stories to tell from both sides, he's an awesome bloke with a lot of knowledge I'd love to tap into sometime, given the opportunity! I'm just happy to see mom the happiest I've seen her in a long time!
==============================================
After breakfast we departed ways with promises of meetings in the near future!
Got home and I got on a mission to CLEAN...
I cleaned up downstairs, cleared the mountains of toys, washed dishes, cleaned kitchen, vacuumed EVERYTHING, then headed to the yard to mow the lawn, pull out weeds, wash the paving & braai, etc, shower, dress and be ready to go, all in 2 hours, while Liezel slept and Tammy watched on, hopefully absorbing a few lessons in future chores!

Next chapter:

{new cold beer} {new music - muthafm doef doef stuff got monotonous and rather boring - time for the HEAVY stuff - Disturbed: Asylum!} My current favourite song! Heavy-heart stuff, brilliant music but after the experience I had this week in the UCT Medical Science Anatomy building, I saw literally hundreds of dead human bodies and dissected parts of, including the skeletal remains of thousands of unnamed people. I am not the same person I was nor do I see life as I did a week ago. But that's another story, which I'll blog about in detail soon! But it freaked the fucking piss out of me for days afterwards!!!!
That said I still love my heavy metal!!! Mostly for the drumming!
==============================================
About that new chapter.... we went over to my brother Warryn (& his lovely wife Nadia & little Jessica's) place for dinner because dad is down from Gaborone for an annual Mining conference in Cape Town. Warryn & family chose to host the gathering at their very cool pozzie, ,my superstar little brother did a brilliant lamb potjie!
Not to steal his recipe, because I'm not, this is only what I saw:
No. 3 pot, heated oil, fried onions & then meat, after 10 minutes he started chucking in a whole plethora of ingredients including whole baby potatoes, after that I missed the rest of the fresh veg & 'secret' sauce that went in...
The end result was a perfect stew of fall-off-the-bone lamb and fresh succulent vegetables in a perfectly balanced sauce of immeasurable deliciousness! Well done little brother, awesome pot! I feel the insecure need to compete sometime! Even my own wife admitted in a diplomatic way that she enjoyed yours more than my last pot! No worries, I do not feel betrayed, only compelled to pull off a culinary Voortrekker masterpiece with a unique thunder the next time I do a pot!
That said, shot bro for an awesome evening to you and Nadia! Thanks for hosting us all with dad's annual February visit, it was really cool to have us all together again at your place! Great to see the old man again with his granddaughters! He's clearly besotted over them and it's fun to watch!
Also from my part I really enjoy spending time with dad these days! He's become quite a fun chilled oke to spend time with! I feel comfortable spending time with him lately like I never did before! It's gonna be lekker having Ronny & dad down the road one of these days permanently!
Shame, Tammy was gutted this morning when she heard Granny Ronny wasn't going to be there today! She actually cried quite heartbroken "I want to see my granny Ronny, I love my granny Ronny". I wish Ronny could've heard that, it was really sweet and heartfelt!
Anyway, bring on Easter in Witsand....

- Liezel & I had the Meerendal Breakfast: 2 over-fried eggs, brown bread toast, fried tomato, deliciously fatty bacon, a big (mine was rather rubbery) mushroom, etc, incl the most delicious sausages x 2. Overall a pretty decent breakfast!
- Mom had the poached egg with salmon and some delicious looking cream-cheese stuff on top!
- Arthur had the Healthy breakfast including what looked like a mountain of muesli and fuck knows whatever else, I didn't wanna stare!
- Tammy had a kiddies (2 egg) plate of scrambled eggs on toast with dinosaur (tomato) sauce and she robbed Liez and me of some sausage. Her meal was perfect for a 3-year old!

Chatterbox
She was so cheerful this morning I couldn't resist snapping off a few shots of her chatting away merrily in the garden before school:
King of the Friday Tea Strikes again!
Ja I realise I would probably make an excellent old lady, like who else brags about doing the best tea parties! Some poor kids out there are missing out on a potentially awesome granny!
The pancakes I slaved over the stove until near midnight last night were a real hit! Both with my colleagues and with Liezel's! The pancakes were properly cooked, light & fluffy; the fillings tasted fantastic, and the presentation was professional!
Unfortunately Liezel's chocolate cake flopped out on her, it just wasn't to be this time. Unlucky, but next time will be twice as good as the last one that worked!
As a result of the chocolate abortion I got some lovely fresh donuts at Pick & Pay with a pack of caramel choc chip biscuits as fillers. The donuts were actually quite good, for a supermarket!
Everybody left the table with full bellies and singing my praises. Yay for me! Yippee - some attention! Woo Hoo! (note the sarcasm!)
Just glad it worked after the effort!
Next time my turn for tea comes around I'm seriously considering rocking up with a waffle iron and ready made waffle mix, and cooking up waffles in the office! The irresistable smell of sizzling waffles will no doubt waft through the building stirring up a feeding frenzy with the other folks around who are not invited to tea! I'm sure my team will quite enjoy the satisfaction of being the priveleged few who get to enjoy freshly made waffles while our colleagues hovering meaninglessly outside the perimiter of room 3.05 can but only slobber on their faces licking their hungry chops and wishing that their lunch hour would come a lot sooner!
Of course there will be a range of mouth-watering toppings for my fresh waffles, including ice-cream, chocolate sauce (home made with real chocolate), hot caramel fudge sauce, cinnamon, peanut butter, bananas & strawberries for the sweet tooths; and some savoury toppings like grated cheese, nuts, bacon bits, etc... I'll do some research and prepare a memorable selection!
If anybody reads this and has some suggestions please comment via the purple comment link below this post!
--------------------------------------------------------
On another note, I found out last night my dad is in town tomorrow. We're meeting up at my brother's place for a braai or something. Quite looking forward to seeing the old man again, and my daughter can see her baby cousin & grandpa at the same time. We haven't seen them in a while and Tammy's always asking about her cousin!
But before meeting dad at Warryn's place, we are having brunch with my mom and her boyfriend at Meerendal wine estate in the morning! I know the boyfriend, met him many years back, literally half my life back (I'm 34 now, do the math) when they first hooked up while my folks divorce was going through. Now he's back on the scene and we are meeting again tomorrow. He is also a keen birdwatcher (of the feathered kind, mostly) as I am so we should have plenty to talk about!
Should be an interesting day! Definitely one for the camera!
Have a nice day folks! I'll be back later...

Pannekoek!
OMG it's so hot and humid here today! We had the most awesome heavy rainstorm earlier this evening, lightning & thunder too! Uncharacteristic for Cape Town at this time of year! Except now with this heavy heat the water has just made the heat more unbearable with the humidity!
Enough about the weather!
Dinner tonight was scrambled egg and corned beef on rolls! Quick and simple!
Yet I've been busy in the kitchen all evening...
Every Friday in the office we take turns between 5 of us to do an 11am tea, supplying usually basic sweets and savouries from Pick & Pay or Woolies. Whenever it's my turn my colleagues can be spotted licking their chops for days in anticipation for the inevitable OTT banquet I usually lay out! No matter how poor I claim to be, it's always a feast.
Tomorrow it's my turn again and the food on offer will be somewhat different to the usual shop-bought crap; I'm making it myself; well some of it anyway! My dear wife has kindly offered to make a chocolate cake, which she is busy with as I write this. It's kind of become her speciality. I'm not particularly fond of cake in general, but as far as chocolate cake goes she does a good cake!
What I've been slaving away at all night is making savoury pancakes! The mix is made and setting for an hour, as per the recipe (yes don't look so shocked - I do use recipes, usually simple things like pancakes, white sauce, and cooking rice, which I still can't get right!)
I've concocted 2 different fillings, as follows:
But first I think a cold shower will be absolute bliss!

I've concocted 2 different fillings, as follows:
- Savoury Chicken consisting of chicken breast pan fried in pepper, herbs & lemon; blended finely with onions fried in a sun-dried marula balsamic vinegar, paprika, and a blob of mayonnaise. Oh yes, and a splash of Nando's Extra Hot sauce!
- Spinach & feta, thick, salty and creamy! Made with fresh spinach and quality feta, lightly cooked with milk, flour, salt & pepper.
But first I think a cold shower will be absolute bliss!
The Daily Noodle
Well it's not noodles today, I needed something a bit more substantial so I went with toast, 2 slices: one with peanut butter and the other with Bovril and mayonnaise. My favourite! Now it's just 3 more hours until lunch.
Got to work late and grumpy again this morning because of the horrible fucken traffic! It's such a waste of time and petrol sitting in traffic like that, I really hate it and I get extremely wound up when other idiots don't play fair! Especially when they try push in front from the outside lane while I've been politely sitting in the queue for 20 minutes just to get the fuck OUT of Tableview! Why the hell the moronic City of Cape Town had to cramp the R27 by adding a great big totally unused bus lane defies belief! Maybe tomorrow I'll try go down Koeberg road again, but something needs to change because this traffic is causing dangerously unhealthy stress!
I suppose that's the perks of living in the city! Personally I would love nothing more than to live rural, somewhere in the bush, and work out there like being a safari tour guide. Even farming would suit me! But that's never gonna happen - so I'm stuck in the shit-hole city!
I should change this title to "The Morning Rant"! LOL, ok I feel better now!
It's so hot and muggy here today!

My Tammy - Feb Week 1
Here's the first photo of my 'project'! Isn't she adorable?
She was chasing me around trying to touch the camera lens...
My little luv luv!
She was chasing me around trying to touch the camera lens...
My little luv luv!
Ideas are starting to ooze...
"Julia and Julia" - I think that's the name of the chick flik I mentioned last night about the woman so inspired by a famous cook-book author that she started a blog to make every recipe in the book in 365 days. Well that's definitely not what I'm embarking on here! I just like chatting about the stuff I cook and eat, especially the bizarre concoctions I sometimes put together that seem perfectly normal to me! I'll get to posting my own recipes in detail as this progresses.
Anyway, the new idea I just had was to upload a photo a day for a period of time like a month, or how about a weekly photo of my daughter... wow that's a cool idea! I'm gonna do that! A weekly pic of my Tammy Rose, I'll back-date them from the beginning of the year. Will start the project tonight!
I'm excited now!
Don't worry, my loyal fans, you will still be entertained with my culinary delights!

Supper for Lunch
Just leftovers from last night's supper (read 2 blogs down for a description!) I was reminded of my strange taste in concoctions today when my colleagues were quite surprised I used curry in pasta, somebody said I'd upset a few Italians. I never thought of it that way, it just felt like a tasty idea and the fusion of Italian and Indian actually worked rather well! It was a good meal!
The Daily Noodle!
How's that title for a regular mid-morning blog update, aptly called the Daily Noodle as a tribute to the routine 2-minute noodles I scoff in the office at around 10am (this morning was Boerewors flava with a dollop of mayo!) to break the hunger pangs that develop during the loooong stretch between breakfast at 6am and lunch at 1pm!
I've discovered I can post to my blog via an email, which I'm busy testing for the first time! Which is convenient as I don't have to risk logging in via the internet while I'm meant to be working, can do a quick update discreetly!
Lets see if this works...

Back on the Blogs!
Hello and welcome to my new blog!
I've been off the blogs, publicly anyway, for quite a while now, but the unintended popularity of my regular Facebook status updates regarding my daily descriptions of my eating habits have hatched an idea to take it a step further, kind of like some chick flick I saw recently, the name of which eludes me; to blog about my bizarre recipes in more detail than the Facebook status restriction allows! Naturally I'll include a whole lot of other comical bullshit in between, and hopefully over time hone my writing and communication skills. You might notice my attempts at writing in clever English often clashes with my need to fucking swear all the time, but I'll find the balance sometime!
BTW: my dinner tonight was delicious - creamy chicken & mushroom pasta cooked in milk with carrots, sweet pepper, onion, a small tin of tomato paste, chicken stock, thyme and a blend of mild Cape Malay curry. I'm not sure if the wife even enjoyed it or not, I certainly did, twice!
I'd actually quite like to partake in a cooking class of some sort in the near future! Not with the aim of becoming a professional chef - I don't think I'd enjoy the bullshit and restrictions of working a busy restaurant kitchen getting yelled at all day and insulted by rude spoilt customers, I hate restaurant customers... no I'd like to learn to get more creative with my home cooking to be able to pull off fantastic meals without breaking the bank. Even on the braai! I know I do a good braai, but it's always from a range of the same things and I want to try something new from the usual lamb chops, my famous burney chicken, ribs, steak, etc.
To do all that I need to learn more about the various ingredients and methods of putting things together. Any recommendations will be most welcome!
In the meantime, I am also about to embark on a 3 month correspondence course through Unisa on small to medium business management! I'm on this mission of starting my own successful business sometime in the relatively near future, even if it's just something on the side from my day job at UCT until it becomes successful, such as photography. But it will take a while to get started because I'm so poor right now I can't find 2 cents to rub together, let alone capital investment.
Well, that's it for now. My bed is pulling at my conscience. The design of this site will be a work in progress, it will get better...
